Immaculate
Conception Jesuit Church - PD361
The
Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church of New Orleans completed
their search for a new Organ builder November 2006 when they
chose Phoenix Organs North America
represented
by D.L. Simmons & Company of Fairhope, Alabama.
Phoenix PD361
3-Manuals – 68
Ranks – 61 Speaking Stops
Immaculate
Conception Jesuit Church
New Orleans, Louisiana
Organ
consultant for Immaculate Conception was Br. Patrick Hough
of Dallas, Texas who among other honors was Organ Scholar at
Leeds Cathedral in the UK several years ago. Before
contacting D.L. Simmons & Company, the church had a
trial installation of a major mass-produced organ. This
organ was found to be unacceptable. During the process of
considering the Phoenix, Br. Hough had to make a trip back
to his native England on an unrelated matter, and at that
time made a trip to Leeds to hear the new Phoenix that has
just been installed there last year.
After hearing and playing the Phoenix at
Leeds, the
decision was made. The
new Jesuit Church organ had to be a Phoenix!
The
origin of the Jesuit church goes back to the original Jesuit
missionaries, who came to this area in 1682. The
present church building was constructed in 1928, which
replaced the previous building on the same site built in
1857. The church was built in the Moorish-style
reflecting the time which, Fr. John Cambiaso, the founding
Priest, spent in Spain. Fr. Cambiaso, who was responsible
for the plans and construction of the church, came to New
Orleans as an official representative of the Superior for
the Province of Lyons, France.
The
new Phoenix Organ is a custom-built organ with an
English stoplist for the first organ, a French stoplist for
the second organ, a Baroque stoplist for the third, and an
English stoplist with amazing realistic orchestral sounds
for the fourth Specification. They all sound
magnificent with the 4-1/2 to 5 second natural
reverb in this space. The organ is 3-manuals in a
dark oak console with 61 speaking stops, including a unique
floating Solo Division with Trumpet en Chamade at 16'-8'-4',
8' Tuba, 8' English Horn, and an 8' French Horn.
The
consultant, Br. Hough, is excited about the installation of
the Phoenix Custom Organ, saying, "This is a great
step forward for music not only in the Jesuit Church but
also for the larger southern community!"
D.L.
Simmons & Company Church Organs,
representatives for Phoenix Organs North America in
the Southeastern States, installed the organ. Simmons
and Phoenix Organs are both honored to be chosen for such an
important musical program in this historic and
nationally recognized church. Make your plans now to
hear this organ!
The
new Phoenix Organ was completed on March 29th,
2007, after six days of installation and voicing.
Donald Anderson, the tonal director of
Phoenix Organs
did the onsite voicing. The organ is located in the high,
rear gallery, more than thirty feet above the nave and the
speakers are mounted on pipe cantilevers more than 50 feet
above the nave floor. This
high position makes for a wonderful, natural blending of the
organ sounds. The
French Reeds especially benefit from this acoustic and from
this high position. Hear this organ:

There
is already a great deal of interest in the new Phoenix
Organ throughout the greater New Orleans musical
community. According the to Music Director of I.M.J.C.,
there are already plans to use the new Phoenix Organ in
several live performance recordings, including Brass
Ensemble with Organ, and String Quintet with Organ.
These recordings should be available
later this year. With
the vibrant musical traditions of New Orleans and the strong
artistic community surrounding Loyola University, Tulane
University, and other area institutions, this organ promises
to become an important part of New Orleans music culture.

Fountain City Presbyterian
Church of
Knoxville
Fountain
City Presbyterian Church of
Knoxville, Tennessee has contracted with D.L. Simmons &
Company, representatives of Phoenix Organs North America,
for a new Three Manual,
Sixty-four Stop Custom digital organ. The designation for
this organ will be the Phoenix
PD364. The organist, Mr. Matt
McCurry and the Director of Music, Mr. Bob Eubanks were
instrumental in both selecting Phoenix as their organ
builder, and in designing the stoplist for the organ. Mr.
Donald Anderson, the Tonal Director of Phoenix Organs
rounded out the stoplist and make sample selections for what
is a stellar example of the offerings of this custom-built
organ company.
The Phoenix PD364 features a
massive Dark Walnut
custom finished three-manual console with inset panels and
roll-top. The stop control is Harris moving drawknobs with
all-white heads and black shafts. All other controls are
from quality pipe organ supply houses. Keyboards are solid
wood-core with off-white naturals.

Livingston United Methodist
Church - PT246
Livingston
United Methodist Church
has chosen the Phoenix
PT246 for their new Organ. After a
thorough search for many organ builders, the church has chosen Phoenix
Organs and D.L. Simmons and Company. They appreciate the honest and
straightforward way we and Phoenix do business, not to mention the
exceptional of sound from this organ. Installation will be
completed
before Easter 2008. See
more...

This low-profile 2-manual, 46-stop console is
very reminiscent
of
French-style consoles and lends itself to situations where
line-of-sight over the console is important, and will also work well in
a chapel or home setting. This
version of the Phoenix PT 246 organ has six discrete audio channels
with AcoustiCube12 speakers and a
large pedal sub-woofer. Other configurations are available.
This
console is comfortable to play, and has a very good "feel" of sitting
at a pipe organ console. You can see the organ maintains all AGO
dimensions and is not a "diminutive interpretation" of an organ console
that is offered by some companies; Notice the massive side-cheeks,
2-1/8' thick, and the solid keydesk 1-3/4" thick, and don't forget
heavily-built pedalboard... it even has attractive bolsters for the 15
toe-studs!

St.
Michaels Catholic Church of Roswell
St.
Michaels Catholic Church of Roswell,
GA has chosen the Phoenix PT335
for their church. The organ features an attractive,
well-built console in oak to match the existing oak in the
gallery space in which it will be placed. With 3
manuals and 45 ranks (35 speaking stops) in three
independent specification, this organ will offer a great
amount of flexibility and resources for the organist.
The organ will speak through six channels and from a
custom-designed central chamber being prepared by the
church. Having the organ speak from this high,
central-axis position and the wonderful acoustics in this
beautiful space will make for a good blending of sound for
the organ and good accompaniment for the choir and
congregation.
