of Praise: Charles Wesley -- Charles Wesley was one of the most prolific
hymn writers of all time, having penned more than 6,500 hymns. Some of them are
among the most beloved hymns of Christian history; hymns like "Hark! The
Herald Angels Sing" appear in the hymnals of every Christian denomination.
Congregational hymn singing was a revolutionary idea in England at the time.
Anglican churches had marvelous choirs, but the congregations rarely sang, and
then only chanted Psalms to three or four simple tunes......... |
The
King of Kings - Criterion Collection --
The King of Kings is the greatest story ever told as only Cecil B. DeMille could
tell it, with the soundtrack for this silent epic improvised by Timothy Tikker
on the 4m 1925 E. M. Skinner organ at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church,
Detroit. With this silent-era spectacle, Cecil B. DeMille cemented his
reputation as the master of the biblical epic. DeMille tells the story of
Christ's life and Passion with great attention to historical accuracy, along the
way paying homage to the religious illustrations of Da Vinci and Doré, and, in
a modern flourish, restaging Christ's resurrection in luminous Technicolor. |

Bach: Complete Works for Organ (14 CD Boxed Set) Marie-Claire Alain is not
only one of the greatest organists alive today, but she stands directly in a
what is undoubtedly the world's greatest tradition of organ playing. It was
France that first rediscovered and cultivated Bach's organ music, and which in
turn stimulated the great works of Franck, Widor, Vierne, and their school.
Alain has recorded Bach's complete organ music no less than three times, here on
historical organs of Bach's own time. Each disc is planned as a recital that
showcases both the music and the instrument. Her performances are simply the
last word in style, musicianship, and virtuosity. Magnificent. --David Hurwitz |

them to produce massive sound... |

Improvising:
How to Master the Art -- Gerre Hancock has long been renowned for his
extraordinary improvisations, and has for many years taught the art of
improvisation at classes and workshops across the United States. Now he has
codified and organized his teaching into a book which carries the organist from
the scale through the fugue, covering on the way interludes, hymns, hymn
preludes, sonata form, canon, and more. Written in an informal style and
illustrated with musical examples and exercises, this book opens wide the door
to musical and technical skill. |
Method
of Organ Playing (8th Edition) --
Since the first appearance of Harold Gleason's Method of Organ Playing in 1937
it has been the most comprehensive and complete tool on the market for training
first-class organists. The Gleason method is unique among books of its kind in
that it has been in a continual state of evolution throughout its eight
editions. The vast practical and pedagogical knowledge of Harold Gleason and his
wife, concert organist Catharine Crozier Gleason is presented in the most
up-to-date fashion in the current eighth edition. Every page of the book
reflects both first-rate and recent scholarship as well as tried and true
materials for beginning players. |
Organists
Manual: Technical Studies and Selected Compositions for the Organ --
Reviewer: (A reader) I have studied organ at the undergraduate and
graduate levels at several music universities. I hold a BS in music education
and a graduate certificate in church music. The organist's manual by Davis is,
in my opinion, far superior to the Gleason Method. All technical exercises and
selection of repertoire is more interesting. I understand the organ much better
after using the Davis book. I own all of the Gleason methods, but I find myself
using and playing from the Davis book more. I congratulate Mr. Davis on this
fabulous instruction manual. Will there be a second edition??? I hope so. |
| Organ-Stops
and Their Artistic Registration -- This 1921 classic by a renowned organ
builder provides organists and all those interested in the instrument with a
guide to its numerous stops, among them bassoon, bass tuba, cymbal, double
trumpet, oboe, piccolo, viola da gamba, and xylophone. The text supplies various
names of each stop in different languages, traces their origins, and describes
their construction, tonal characteristics, and value in artistic combination and
registration. A fascinating book about the "Monarch of all
Instruments" for students, teachers, and professional musicians. A
"must-have" for the organist's library. Introduction by Rollin Smith.

The
Registration of Baroque Organ Music -- Barbara Owen has prepared the first
work to present in a single book the registrational practices of organists from
c.1550 to 1800. The four parts of the book move from the Renaissance through the

political and religious climate of the period and the way such factors affected
the compositions and the organ-building of the time. |

Vierne: Organist of Notre Dame Cathedral (Complete Organ) --
Review: This is the most complete book on Vierne to date. Highly recommended.
The majority of the book is Vierne's own Memoirs translated into English. The
remainder consists of some analyzation
of the organ works, textual corrections of the symphonies, improvisation themes
written by Vierne, etc. Most complete, and a fascinating read as well as being
highly useful. No organist should be without a copy! |
